January 1/22 Welcome to what
we hope will be a great year. Photo at
right is Scarlett Scott daughter of Ryan and
Eliza. Scarlett is now a little over 2 months
old.
|
|
||
January 14/22 The
weather here in Red Lake continues to be very cold
(25-30 below each morning). When the weather
warms up it snows. At this point we are
undecided which we prefer. |

January 17/22 Ryan,
Eliza, Scarlett and Eliza's father Leelan managed to
get out for some ice fishing. |

January 19/22 Tim
is keeping us supplied with fishing pictures from
TexasHey Bill & Louise, Hope all is well. We are still getting out on Lake Travis despite the inconsistent weather. Bass have been active lately during the pre-spawn. See you soon. Tim |
|
||
January 21/22 We
had an interesting thing happen in our driveway.
People have reported 2 lynx in the neighborhood and we
got to see them both today. They actually walked
along the edge of our deck and down the sidewalk
before climbing the bank and returning to the bush. |
|
||
February 13/22
Extremely cold this morning. Our old thermometer
exaggerates a little bit but is is for sure 35 below Fahrenheit. It would be nice to hope for warmer weather but that would mean more snow. |
|
||
February 13/22 continued. We
have the most snow we have had in the past 20 years or
so and there is still a couple months of snow to
go. The lynx will have to really jump the
next time they come around. |
|

February 14/22 Message from
Scott D. Bill, Louise, Ryan, and Eliza,
First of all congrats to Ryan and Eliza on the
arrival of Scarlett! Going after Redfish and
Speckled Trout in the Louisiana delta is not a bad way
to get in some fishing until the summer when I'll be
heading back up to Monroe Lake. Every time I
think it's cold in TN I look at the temp in Red
Lake. No comparison.
Looking forward to seeing you in June!
Take care, Scott

March 1/22 With the upheaval of
the past couple of years, for many people the plans
laid out for 2020 are much changed in 2022 and as a
result of group size changes and switching both dates
and lakes we have open dates available. Please let your friends know we have space available for them. We all want to get back to enjoying sunsets this summer. |
|
||
March 13/22 Not much to report
from Red Lake. The temperature still drops well
below zero at night and warms up during the day.
We got another 4 inches of snow last night. We
have more snow than we have had in the past 30
years. |
|
||
March 15/22 Yes the old
snowblower still works and the deep snow is no
exaggeration. |
|
||
March 17/22 Scarlett wishes
everyone a happy St. Paddy's day. Here in Red Lake we actually had a little melting. Not much but the highways are bare. The good news is starting April 1/22 vaccinated travelers can enter Canada without showing a negative test. |
|
||
March 26/22 No change here it is still
winter. Paul sent this picture. Apres ski at Mammoth Mtn, CA wearing my favorite hat. |
|
||
March 31/22 We received this
message from BillThis was the view from our condo here in Fountain Hills about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Four Peaks mountain which is about 17 miles from here. It melted in about 3 days. If we really want to see snow we just drive up to Flagstaff. But why would we do that? Take care BillIF you haven't guessed from the message end, Bill is from Minnesota. |
|
||
April 7/22 Today we sent out an
email to everyone coming in May and June showing where
they can access the information package for their
trip. If you did not receive the email please
check your spam. If you still cannot find it
please email us. |
Fresh snow this morning. We are so looking forward to rain. This should melt by tomorrow afternoon. |
||
April 9/22 Bob went south for a
little Crappie action. The hat managed to serve as a fishing conversation starter. |
|
||
April 15/22 Once again it is
time for the annual photo of our bay. What a
change this year. A late spring blizzard ended
yesterday. |
|
||
May 5/22 I recently had the
occasion to help a friend set up the Arrive Can app
and use the app myself. The app is definitely
here to stay and the first time you use it you will
hate it. Once you get onto it it will save many
hours at the border. The app is designed to eliminate the examination of paperwork at the border. |
Advice to help using the app. It is important to download the latest version of the Arrive Can app. If your app is asking about a quarantine plan it is not the latest version. Make sure your password includes a capital, a special character and a number. When you use your camera to examine your passport the app will automatically capture the image of your passport. You do not take a picture. You will know the capture has taken place when all of your passport information shows up on the screen. Next you will be asked to take a photo of your vaccination paperwork. Take 2 - one of the whole document and one of the QR code. No more than 72 hours ahead of arriving at the border enter the name of the port where you will be entering Canada. For most of our guests it will be Fort Frances. You are now done with the app. When you arrive at Canada customs they will scan your passport and all of the information from the app will be available to them on their screen. So no showing paperwork. Bring the paperwork along anyway (just in case) The postal code for Red Lake is P0V2M0 (the “0’s” are all zeroes...) |

May 13/22 Photo at right is
Howey Bay this afternoon. We have had a lot of
rain the water levels are high. The ice should
be out by Monday or Tuesday. We plan on getting
Unnamed Lake ready on Monday. |
|
||
|
|||
May 20/22 The last of the ice
left Goose Lake overnight. First guests arrive
today and a full camp on Saturday. Woman Falls
is really impressive. |

May 24/22 The Walleye are
plentiful 100 yards downstream from the Honey
Hole. The water is so high people have traveled up North Bay as far as the rapids. The water is high but dropping. The weather is a bit cool but warming. The fishing gets better each day. I guess this must be spring. |
|
||
May 25/22 The Honey Hole
produces a 27.5 inch Walleye. |
|
||
May 26/22 Here are some pictures of both of our 25” walleyes today on Goose Lake. 42 walleye in 2 hours. Best we’ve ever had in our lifetime fishing in Ontario! Biggest were 19,19,21,21,23,25,25 Thank you Ryan and Bill for the tip on
where to go!
|
|
||
May 31/22 |
|

June 7/22 38 inch at the
Honey Hole. Roger The Honey Hole still produces great Walleye. |
|
||
June 8/22 The Walleye keep
getting bigger |
|
||
June 8/22 There is more than
just fish at the Honey Hole. |
|
||
June 12/22 Happy kids |

June 13/22 Bill, Louise, Ryan and Eliza, Another fantastic and memorable trip to Monroe is
in the books for 2022. Here are some highlights
from our trip:
* A total of 1,360 fish caught between the 3 of us
which averages to 194 per day
* My personal best of 92 fish caught in one day
* My personal best of 498 total fish caught at
Monroe
* Multiple walleye caught in the 21 - 24" range
* We lost count on how many times all three of us
had a fish on at the same time
* Pike fishing was hot and cold when we were
targeting them in the shallows and weeds
* Twice we had a walleye on and a pike decided to
latch on to the walleye
* We had an eagle swoop in and pick up a wounded
walleye for lunch. An amazing sight to witness.
Thank you for getting Monroe ready given the record
water level and the extra work you had to put in to
get the dock ready.
Regards,
Scott

June 19/22 Bill,
I just wanted to
touch base and say we had a great trip into
Whitelaw. The cabin was more than adequate
and the fishing was great. We estimated
between the four of us we caught about 1,000
fish. In one location, my boat (two people)
caught 150 fish in two hours! It was in the
lake above the portage. It was the first
time I had fished in Ontario and I'm looking
forward to a return trip.
Hope you are
doing well and the fishing is still great.
Tom
|
|||
June 26/22 Had a great time at
Whitelaw last week other than the flight out; hope the
next time it's not so bumpy. We caught more fish
than ever before. Everyone wants to come back
next year.
Thank you!
Rick

June 28/22 We had 4 otter trips
to Goose Lake with the equipment and lumber for our
big solar project. The new system means we will
have electric refrigerators and freezers. |
|
||
July 2/22 Eliza's parents Joni
and Leelan as well as Ryan's dad Shaun came to camp to
help with the solar project. |
|
||
July 4/22 We poured a slab to mount
the battery box. We dug holes to install the
sonotubes and big feet anchors. |
|
||
July 5/22 We poured concrete
into the tubes and installed threaded rod anchors and
rebar. |
|
||
July 6/22 We built a box for the
24 batteries. |
|
||
July 7/22 We fastened the 6x6
timbers to the threaded rod on the sonotubes and cut
down the the 130 year old jack pine tree beside the
brown shed. |
|
||
July 8/22 We built the frames
for the solar panels and stood them up. We moved
the batteries to the battery box. |
|
||
July 10/22 We assembled and
installed the rails that hold the solar panels. |
|
||
July 11/22 We finished
installing all of the solar panels |
|
||
July 12/22 We wired up the
panels to the panel combiners. |
|
||
July 13/22 We installed a cable
from the generator to the inverter. The inverter
is very heavy. We ended up using a small come-a-long
to lift it into place. |
|
||
July 14/22 We wired in the
charge controllers |
|
||
July 15/22 A long day getting
Poirier Lake ready and bringing Matt and Jim to
Poirier. Then back to camp to work late changing
the wiring system over to handle the new inverter
system. We moved a new refrigerator into cabin
one and our cabin. The inverter/solar system is
up and running. |
|
||
July 21/22 With the projects
going on at camp we forgot to mention fishing is
great. John managed to land a 30 inch Walleye
and the grand kids are thrilled with the fast action
especially below White Dog falls. |
|
||
July 25/22 We finally finished
up installing power shut offs in each building and
running new circuits to power the refrigerators. |
|
||
July 30/22 A nice warm day gave
us the chance to make repairs on the dock at Goose
Lake. |
|
||
July 31/22 Another nice day so
we finished up building new trestles under the dock
walk way. |
|
||
August 4/22 After a couple of
weeks running on the new solar system we had a
catastrophic failure of the inverter. We ran the
generator for a couple of days then flew to Kenora to
get a replacement unit. All is running great
now. |
|
||
August 12/22 This 27 inch
Walleye was caught at the Honey Hole. |
|
||
August 22/22 Just a quick note
to let you know all is well here. The weather is
warm but not hot, the fishing is hot and the sun still
rises in the east. |
|
||
September 3/22 The whole camp
was on the dock this evening to see the northern
lights. Our photo gallery page has more
pictures. The aurora covered the sky from east
to west. |
|
||
September 5/22 Ryan and Eliza
finished the Red Lake Fall Classic Walleye tournament
in the money at 6th place. |
|
||
September 10/22 Dave and Steve
are having great fishing at Goose Lake in the
Honey Hole and Nechigona Lake in the Vee. We are
traveling to Monroe Lake to rebuild the dock and shut
down the outpost. For those that frequent Monroe
Lake. Yes, the rock is gone and the other one is
avoided by the crooked dock, |
|
||
September 17/22 Jon wants to
know if his was the only Loon Haunt hat at the
Nebraska /Oklahoma game. |
|
||
September 26/22 It is now
official. After October 1/22 travelers will no
longer need to be vaccinated to enter Canada.
The Arrive Can app will not be compulsory and no
testing of any kind will be required. We look
forward to seeing you all in 2023. |
|
||
September 28/22 We finished up closing
camp and flew to town in the late afternoon. |
|
||
Mid October 2022 The weather has
been perfect for early October. Hardly any
wind. We had to get some additional fill for the
town dock. The high water this spring eroded our
shoreline. |
|
||
November 2/22 We drove to
Minneapolis to catch a flight to Boston to visit
family. It has been several years since we drove
this route and we were pleasantly surprised.
Highway 105 and 502 were in great shape. Highway
53 south from International Falls is also in great
shape and the twin highway now starts at Tower. |
|||
November 11/22 We drove back to
Red Lake in the snow. This is the snow that will
stay all winter. |
|
||
November 19/22 Ryan, Eliza and
Scarlett made a visit to Red Lake. When you call or
email Ryan will answer your questions and handle your
booking. Scarlett has been walking since mid October. |
