GREETINGS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR GUESTS OF 2005!
What a difference a year makes! The very late ice-out of 2004 was forgotten as we welcomed the record ice-out of 2005. Howey Bay in Red Lake was ice free by April 21st, surely a new lake record. Being able to get our operation up and running unhindered by ice conditions and unpressured by time constraints is a bonus. We began getting the Monroe and Unnamed locations ready from town and then flew to Goose Lake to ready things there. Thankfully Dave Knox arrived to help once again and things got done in a hurry. We get as much cleaning and painting done in the fall as possible so that even a late ice-out will not hold things up for a speedy start to the season. Favourable weather aided us in getting the Cherrington, Poirier and Whitelaw outposts ready to go and we were primed for the onflux of fishermen.
This year we noticed some mayflies in May, a rare occurrence. In some ways, it was almost as if the entire season was on fast forward. Nature's patterns did not dally this year and some insect cycles that would typically linger for a week or so lasted 3 days. In particular, we noticed that the large flying ants had a shortened life cycle as did the mayfly hatch at the end of June. For some reason, the flowers called Indian Pipes were in scant supply this year. There were not many blueberries but Dawn Robinson managed to pick enough for a couple batches of blueberry pancakes at Goose Lake.
Lake levels were all over the place with the early and persistent rains. Goose Lake peaked on June 9th and slowly receded only to peak again July 6th. The lake was over the dock but short of last year's high water mark Bill constructed a ramp on top of the dock at Goose and Unnamed Lakes. Whitelaw, Cherrington and Monroe all had record lake levels. Only the Poirier location was unchanged this year. Portages were soggy and good boots were a must. The portage to Nechigona lake was treacherous and was avoided by most fishermen but a few hardy guests cut through the bush and created a new path to the lower lake. It was worth it for Max Barnes, he caught a 29 inch Walleye in the lower river. Woman Falls was outstanding and there were many photos taken there this summer. It was a particularly windy season with more than enough rainfall to hamper any forest fires that started. We lost a few trees at Goose Lake and a few at Monroe Lake as well.
Although there were great numbers of fish caught again this year, the big ones did not give themselves up as easily as in the last couple of seasons. Our veterans who know where to go and what to use did not connect with as many large Walleyes and Northerns as they did in 2003 and 2004. The reasons are unclear but we noticed this at all our locations and checked with other resort owners to find that they all had similiar results.
Building materials trickled in to Goose Lake every time there was room on airplanes throughout the season and by mid September the logs arrived so Bill and his helpers could construct the new fish house. We accomplished our goal to put up the building and stain the outside before we left in the fall. Next spring we will finish the interior. We also had dismantling the old service building on our list of 2005 chores but ran out of time. Bill was not sure if it would take 3 days or 3 weeks as he did not construct the original building to come apart. If possible, he wants to save the logs for a future building project. Depending on how things go, he will either succeed or we'll be burning the nicest firewood you've ever seen!
Although there was wild rice in south bay, it did not amount to much this year with the high water conditions that prevailed for much of the summer. There was no crop to pick but we noticed many geese and ducks coming down so there must have been some for them. The first Sandhill cranes started flying south August 16th, a good 2 weeks early. The Canada geese were right on time, August 28th. As we were leaving camp to fly home on September 30th, we noticed a lone Canada goose walking around on the beach in front of the new service building. We have never observed this before and figured it must have been too tired to fly any further without resting and eating.

Louise's Chatter
* On the whole, the weather co-operated this season and changeovers went smoothly. The only exception was for some of the Lockefeer party that had to spend an extra night at Unnamed in June. Bill showed up to help fly some of the group back to Red Lake and then the weather closed in again so the rest of the party was stranded at Unnamed for the night. The Spence party was also delayed getting to Unnamed to start their fishing adventure.
* There were many, many moose sightings in late May and early June. While putting out reef markers on Goose Lake one afternoon, Bill and Dave Knox saw 3 moose. They were able to get quite close to a cow for a very good picture. (See our photo gallery) Tom and Sean Mullen observed 4 in two days and the Samuels/Lecos group chalked up 6 different sightings in their five day stay. Don and Zach Sloan came upon 2 moose in their travels on the lake. The all-time record for moose sightings was made by the Wade party while enroute to Red Lake to fly out to Cherrington Lake - 13!
* The eagles at Poirier Lake wanted some space and moved their nest over to the inlet.
* At Goose Lake, we watched for "Ernesto" to come back and there was an immature eagle sitting in one of the trees by the boats one day that might have been him. A dead sucker had washed up on one of the boat ramps and a couple of seagulls were enjoying the free meal. When they were done with the carcass, the eagle hopped down to see if there was anything left. This could have been Ernesto we thought because he didn't seem to know he was an eagle and exhibited the very same tentative behavior as last year.
* Burke Samuels was casting off the shore lunch island and almost stepped on a loon sitting on her nest. The loon went off one way and Burke quickly stepped the other way to avoid stepping on her single egg. An opportunistic raven pounced on the nest and it must have been something to see Burke trying to scare the raven away while the pair of loons were making a commotion nearby.
* Jim Heater's group experienced the best fishing in all their years of coming to Goose Lake.
* Gary McKee's crew of 7 had the most fun of anybody this year. They used 2 foot long ultralight rods with 4 pound test line and chaulked up over 1000 fish in their 5 day stay. By the way, Claude, your lost rod was pulled out of the water and is sitting here waiting for you to claim it.
* Zach Slone had a 50"+ Northern on at Woman Falls that eluded him twice. All summer long, fishermen tried to entice this monster to bite again, but it is still waiting to be caught.
* Don and Zach Slone chaulked up an impressive 213 fish in one day. Not to be outdone, Corey Gresham, Ron Henkenius and Jeff Simons added their daily total of 247 fish to the bragging board.
* This summer, we saw guests from Japan and New Zealand.
* Rob Droullard's foursome showed us it is possible for Viking and Packer fans to fish together in harmony, at least before the NFL season starts.
* Bryan Hosick Jr. caught a 27 inch Walleye and thought he had the big fish for the week until his father caught a 28 inch Walleye the next day.
* An artificial bait called "Gulp" was used with great success early in the season by Jack Sande and others. Jack tipped a jig with both a gulp and a live minnow and caught a 30 inch Walleye in the 10 foot hole.
* This year we noticed that cordless electric knives were the preferred Father's Day gift.
* Steve and Nina Milliner outdid themselves this year. For 4 years in a row, they have held the record Walleye at Poirier Lake and when Steve caught another 28.5 inch Walleye this year we thought, "here he goes again!" But, it was to be better than that, Steve caught and released a 32.5 inch Walleye while Nina cheered him on! Steve's secret? Fish deep water.
* Dan Polfliet caught a 40 inch Northern by snagging its back. No leader on the jig and he still managed to reel it in and measure it.
* Jerry Bly reported catching 12 fish on a stickleback minnow.
* This summer, my sister, Beth Drechsler and cousin Paul Horban and I made the portage to Nechigona Lake for an afternoon of fishing. When we were approaching the lower boat ramp at Whitedog Falls, we noticed a big animal in one of the boats on the ramp. It seemed to be interested in something in the bottom of the boat and was not threatened by us at all. We watched as it lifted its head and were surprised to be looking face to face at a wolf. It jumped out of the boat but moved out of the way so we could pull up the boat and remove our fishing equipment for the short portage to the top of the falls. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit leery as it sat and continued to watch us. We made our way up the portage looking frequently over our shoulders to see if it followed us but it did not. We thought it was a little strange but thought we'd never see it again. Wrong! When Bill flew over to Poirier Lake to check on Ron and Kathy Neider a few days later, they told him about seeing this buff coloured wolf right next to the cabin. They were able to take its picture too. Then, 2 weeks later, the Leppert/Pearson/Knoll group was fishing on the Wall and observed the same wolf walking down the shoreline. Earlier that day, Bill and I spotted it as it looked for food around the camp. It even walked into the minnow room and store. Bill was able to get quite a few pictures of it. We know it returned a few times over the summer because of the evidence left on the trail but we never saw it again.
* This August we were pleased to see 4 generations of the Gerber family fish with us at Goose Lake: Franz, Terry, Ted and Jackson.
* Ken Dawson's group made the portage to Nechigona Lake and took along the makings for a shore lunch. When the morning fishing was done and lunch sounded like a great idea, they proceeded to the shore lunch spot. They quickly realized that they had left the frying pans back in the boats at the top of the falls. No frying pans? No problem! Just put foil on the grill and change the plan a little. Grilled fish replaced fried fish and it was reportedly delicious.
* There were quite a few otter sightings this year. Ron Hartke, Steve Fox and Dan Polfliet all saw the territorial otter that lived below Whitedog Falls. The aggressive otter, however, took a dislike to Dan for some reason and came up out of the water to chase him at the portage. Scott Bittner and Harold Strever spotted a group of 3 otters at Goose Lake. Not many cariboo sightings this year, but Tod and Jens Anderson were fortunate to see one in the upper river.
* With all the construction at Goose Lake we have many folks to be indebted to for helping move supplies. The Beauchamp, Hosick, Forgey, Smithson/Walsh and Gerber parties made short work unloading lumber and shingles for the new building. Ken Dawson's group aided in unloading windows and doors and Dan Polfliet's crew along with Scott Bittner and Harold Strever helped when the logs arrived. Thank you all again.
* There were new gas tanks to be flown into some outposts and old ones to be removed this year. Many thanks to Bob Holliday's guys for helping unload the new tank at Whitelaw. We are grateful Fred Kruse and Eric Westrup gave up a couple of hours of fishing to help Bill set up the new tank. The Crabb and Lockefeer parties at Unnamed helped muscle the old tank on to the waiting plane while the Rose and Kruse parties aided the pilot in removing the old tank at Cherrington. We really appreciate your help everyone.
* We aren't just saying it, our guests are the best! We had a trying year as far as high water goes and our guests cheerfully dealt with every twist and turn of circumstances. Steve and Sandy Boehm walked through knee high water to get to the Whitelaw cabin without a complaint.
* Thank you to Frank Wirtz for helping load the old stove at Whitelaw and to Dan Polfliet's crew for assisting with the log splitter at Goose. The Leppert/Pearson/Knoll group helped with loading the old minnow freezer at Goose, thanks again.
* Brian and Riley Sinon interrupted their fishing to help Bill with the construction of a new propane platform at Whitelaw. Dan Rauenhorst's group assisted with dismantling the temporary ramp at Unnamed. Many thanks to all.
* We appreciate all the help given by outpost guests with loading and unloading propane cylinders, gas drums and firewood.
* We are the grateful recipients of gifts over the season and have many to thank for their acts of kindness. Chuck Thomas brought t-shirts and Swiss army knives, Bud Renkoski made us a delicious strawberry rhubarb pie, Lon Bernth provided a loon mug for my morning coffee, Don and Lynn Pieper brought special coffee, Bruce and Kay Bertzyk gave a variety of teas and Frank Chornak kept us warm with hats and gloves. Jim Vincent donated a jar of homemade jam and there was a wonderful assortment of garden veggies donated by Jack Sande, Ron and Hazel Shave, Steve and Nina Milliner, Terry and Brenda Cummings, Paul and Norma Horban, Alice Knoll, Tina Olson, Rene Leppert, Howard Eads, Ron Hartke, Sherm Sweeney, and Steve Fox.
* J.C. and Dawn Robinson shared their homemade jam and Wisconsin cheese, Tom Webster's party brought along a box of delicious candy, Amy Anderson and Stan Kosiewicz brought tangy taco sauce mix from New Mexico and Scott Bittner and Ron and Kathy Neider donated reading material for those rainy days. Scott also outfitted Bill with a spiffy shirt and shared a bottle of spicy pickled vegetables with me.
* Ken Smithson's group surprised me with a birthday cake(baked and decorated by Tom Steepy), complete with candles and a bottle of wine. Many thanks for your kindness. (The wine was delicious!)
* Mike Hubbard assisted Bill in picking up the reef markers the last few days of the season.
While we were closing the Whitelaw cabin in the fall, we came across this poem and thought we would share it with you.
I've come here to this special place,
Far from my usual hectic pace,
Where Northerns pounce and Walleye prowl,
Loons will hoot and wolves can howl,
Bears call home nearby I'm sure,
This awesome place so clean and pure,
I'll soon be gone against my will,
But let me say,
Thank God for Bill!

Four Generations of the Gerber Family at Goose Lake.
Thank you for taking the time to enter your catch on the bragging boards. We enjoy reading about your success and often feel we were in the boat with you! We can imagine the thrill of catching these fish and the satisfied feeling of releasing them so they can swim away unharmed.
