To All Our 2003 Guests, We Extend good Wishes To You In This Holiday Season!

Our 2003 season was another successful one and we thank you all for making Loon Haunt Outposts your annual fishing destination.  We saw many sunburned noses this year and a lot of  happy fishermen!

We began our Spring projects while the ice was still on the lakes to get a "jump start" this year.  In April, we were able to land our plane on skis at Poirier, Monroe, Cherrington and Unnamed.  We installed new kitchen cupboards and counter top at Poirier and started preparing all four cabins for the first guests.  The ice went out of Goose Lake on May first so there was no time crunch like last year.

Goose Lake was our first destination after ice out,  we arrived there May 13th with our supplies.  The weather was warm and dry and it felt great to be back in the bush.  There were a few downed trees to cut up, but no other surprises. We were confident Spring rains would help the low water levels.  Over the next ten days, we flew to all the outposts and readied them for incoming guests.  Our friend, Dave Knox, arrived to help with the startup and the work got done in a hurry.  Bill even had time to fish for a few hours with Dave. (the only fishing he would get to do all season)

The much hoped for Spring rains never materialized and lake levels remained low all summer.  Because of the dry weather, bugs were not an issue this year.  With the dry conditions, a few forest fires started, but none threatened us.  A water bomber put on quite a show at Goose Lake as it picked up lake water for a fire close by.  The Pease party was able to get some good close-up pictures of the plane.  There were a couple of fire bans to contend with as well.

Walleye fishing was outstanding this year with many, many large fish caught and released.  The Northern fishing was noticeably down in our opinion.  Perhaps it had something to do with low water levels or warmer water.  The big Northerns were biting early in the season, had lockjaw all summer and then started biting again in the early Fall.  Some of our seasoned Northern fishermen did not connect with this toothy predator and we are at a loss to explain the reason.  Perch fishing was very good this year with record numbers caught and new "hot spots" found.

Mother Nature produced many storms this season, some of them quite violent.  We lost many trees here at Goose Lake as storms and high winds passed through.  Bill had to cut down the "dip net tree" because it started leaning against another tree and there was a danger it might fall on someone.  The "eagle's nest tree"  also fell down just after the eagles had vacated it for the year in late July.  Falling trees crunched a couple of canoes, damaged a boat and pretty much destroyed the wild rice picker speed head.  But the best show of the year was put on by the tornado that passed through South Bay on Goose Lake July fourth.  A storm had hit us at Goose Lake just before noon bringing large hail, rain and high winds.  We were all outside checking out the damage when some of us heard an ominous "freight train sound" coming from the southeast part of the lake.  We could not see anything from the camp except a wall of hail off in that direction.  Not all of our guests made it safely back to camp before the storm hit.  Jim and Dottie Perrault and Bob and Karen Newstrom were still out on that part of the lake as we understood they were going to do a shore lunch.  They saw the funnel cloud from their vantage point on shore.  To see pictures of the storm and read their observations go to www.flyinoutposts.com/Twister/  Thankfully everyone was safe although a few tackle boxes were repaired with duct tape for the trip home!  The roofing on 4 of our cabins had to be replaced because of hail damage.

We suspected there would be substantial wild rice as the conditions were extremely favourable this year.  And it was a bumper crop!   Somewhat hampered by high winds and rain much of the time, we were still able to pick 10,100 pounds.  Our lake is a regular Fall stop for thousands of migrating geese and ducks.  They were happily eating their way through the thousands of pounds we left for them as we departed..

Whenever the weather stopped us from picking rice, we flew to the outposts and winterized them.  Our last big job at camp was to cut down many trees to make room for a new service building.  Bill used his excavator to dig down to bedrock and poured cement foundation pilings.  With the low water levels, the conditions were perfect for this job.  Now that  this important part of the project is completed, construction of the new building can begin next year.

The Fall migration of Sandhill Cranes started on August 27th and the Canada Geese on August 29th.  The weather turned cold the last week in September and we burned stacks of firewood.  When we awoke to a blanket of snow on the ground the morning of the 30th, we knew it was time to leave and hurried through the last jobs to fly home later that day.

2003 IMPROVEMENTS:

PLANNED FOR 2004:

Louise's Chatter

-  This year, the weather cooperated on the weekends and changeovers went smoothly with few delays.
-  A very big thank you to Burke Samuels and his crew for helping Bill unload the excavator in May.  We couldn't have done it without you guys!
-  Don Rose and his family fished Cherrington lake in May and reported catching Lake Trout, Walleye, Northern and Whitefish all in the same bay!
-  Our guests this year came from far away places - England, Korea and Hawaii!
-  Our thanks to the Wall and Frank parties for helping load the old fuel tank at Monroe.
-  Our congratulations to Brian Doubek and Betsy Mach!  Brian popped the question during their Poirier fishing trip.
-  There were many, many wildlife sightings this year.  Black bear, moose, woodland caribou, martin, mink, deer, otters and beavers were all seen over the summer.  Jenni Van Bergen and Cherie Beretta saw a bear at the "honey hole" and then 2 moose later that day in the same place.  Many guests saw the cow moose and calf here on Goose Lake.  Burke Samuels comes to expect that he will see moose at a certain spot on Goose Lake and he is never disappointed.  It's as though they are waiting for him to show up!  The Beede, Ormsby and Schaefer group saw moose three days in a row!  Bud Renkoski's group saw a caribou cow and calf just down the shore from the camp at Goose.
-  The Steve Schlack party of 6 reported catching 20 Walleye over 23 inches during their stay at Goose lake.  Steve and a few other members of his group fished a few "all nighters"  and said the Walleye really started biting at 4:30 a.m.  That's dedication!
-  We receive numerous gifts from you and do thank you for your kindness.  Your home made pickles were a hit Brian Doubek and Betsy Mach.  Doug and Kathy Scheper, the barbecue sauce was much appreciated.  To Frank Chornak, sorry you couldn't make it this year, but many thanks for the hats.  Bud Renkoski, the pies were outstanding!  Thanks to Don and Lynn Pieper and Tom Heilman for the fresh fruit and veggies.  Jim Joines brought us Vidalia onions all the way from Georgia!  Bill Herdman told me about a new gizzmo on the market to make weed whacking easier and sent it to me, thanks Bill.  Ron and Hazel Shave brought tomatoes from Arkansas,  Rick Leppert  and Scott Bittner brought Iowa corn.  We really appreciate the corn and tomatoes brought by Mike Hubbard from Iown and by Howard Eads from Illinois.
-  We are impressed with organization and the Lewitske group (first timers at Goose Lake) did not disappoint us.  They showed up with gear stored in numbered boxes and marked in yellow duct tape.  Wow!
-  At Monroe Lake, Mike Hubbard caught a bat in a mouse trap.
-  We enjoy reading on those rainy days and Ron and Kathy Neider provided us with some wonderful "reads".  Thank you very much.
-  Our thanks to Steve and Nina Milliner for the Illinois garden veggies.
-  Brittany Hancock was captivated by how tame the Canada Jays or "Whiskey Jacks" are.  These birds are of the Blue Jay family and can be hand fed.  They are a common occurrence in early Summer and Fall.  We have heard it said that they are the souls of lumberjacks long departed.  They are well mannered birds and always chirp thanks as they fly away with each beak full.
-  Joe and Alex Abramajtys were fishing the hump at Poirier Lake when they noticed that they had floated away from the hot spot. (They were tied up to the anchor that has been stuck on this rock pile for years.)  For some reason, the anchor eased out of the rocks and they had to find the right spot again by using the GPS coordinates that some helpful fisherman had listed in the cabin.
-  Although the big Northerns seemed to be elusive this year, some did put on a show for fishermen.  They surfaced unexpectedly when smaller Walleyes were already hooked.  Lucky fishermen were able to sometimes net both Walleye and aggressive Northern at the same time!  John Eschner, Morris Craig, the Harringtons and Dan Polfliet all had something to talk about when this happened to them.
-  Thanks to Tad Wegmann for sharing his "sourdough savvy" with me!  I will keep experimenting with it Tad.  Thanks for the gardening tips Pat Wegamann and for the recipes Betsy Hosick.
-  Each season, we rely on helpful fishermen to assist us with heavy freight and we appreciate it very much.  Unloading gas drums and propane cylinders at the Ouposts has to be done before the airplane can be loaded for the flight to town.  Thanks to those who gave the pilot a hand with this job.
-  This year we needed help with shingles at Goose Lake and the Beauchamp/Collins party made short work of unloading the planes.  Thanks guys!  When it came time to send damaged roofing to town, we were helped by the Kolkman and Robinson parties - thank you.  There was a dock full of damaged roofing to fly out and the Pearson/Knoll/Leppert parties aided us too,  thank you all!
-  The Rizzo crew reported great success with catching large Walleyes in three feet of water over reefs in Unnamed Lake in late August.
-  A big thank you to the Wegmann and Hosick parties for helping unload lumber at Goose Lake!
-  Dan Polfliet and Jerry Bly's gang assisted in loading 4000 pounds of wild rice for the trip to town and we are grateful.
-  While making the portage at Nechigona Lake, my sister Beth Drechsler and Ron Shave saw a Whitetail Deer.  Although I was also present, I missed it.  This is only the second time in our twenty six years that there has been a deer sighted this far north.
-  A meal with our guests is a much appreciated "night out".  Our thanks to Lon Bernth's group and the Dan Polfliet/Jerry Bly crew for sharing their dinner with us.
-  Thank you for the time you spent with us this year.  We appreciate our loyal repeat clientele, and the referrals you send our way.  Thank you for the email, letters and photos.  We could never grow without your kindness, and we thank you all so much.  Loon Haunt Outposts will be ready for your next trip.

The winner of the Free trip draw for 2003 was ERIC  PEASE please send in a picture to qualify for the 2004 draw.

In Memorium

One of our long time guests passed away in early 2003.  Ken Rader was an avid fisherman and good sport.  Cherrington Lake was his favorite destination and he fished many happy years there.  Rest in peace, Ken.
